Montecito Life
October 1984
There will be an opening reception Friday, October 5 fro 7 to 10 p.m. at the Astra Gallery in El Paseo for Larry Rankin, a Montecito artist, whose exhibit of new "non-objective" sculptures will be on view October 6 through 30.
Rankin, an internationally known sculptor, will show a selection of pieces demonstrating his adeptness at working in the various mediums of cast bronze, carved wood and stone.
He has exhibited widely. "Brotherhood," a four-ton sandstone sculpture which he co-created with Mexican sculptor Martin Gonzales, is on permanent exhibit at Guadalajara's Jalisco State Cultural Fine Arts Department. He has also shown in the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco, Solvang's Copenhagen Galleri, the Golz Gallery in Los Angeles and recently in the Santa Barbara Arts Council's Studio 10 Gallery, where he was described by art critic Richard Ames as "deserving great local recognition."
Rankin's rural Indiana upbringing directed his artistic goal forward that of simplicity and a genuine desire to crate form and share it with others.
